![]() ![]() Timmerman said the MMPI is not a test, but a personality inventory. The person who claimed to have reported the test said in an email provided by Dobson that he wanted the test offline because it allows criminals, like sex offenders, to practice and âÄúoptimize their scores.âÄù But Dobson and Kevin Timmerman, who sent him the software to score the MMPI as well as the test questions and scales, maintain that putting the personality assessment online does not weaken it. He said it is unethical to post these contents online. âÄúHaving the items of the test online basically works to destroy the test,âÄù Butcher said. He compared knowing the contents of the MMPI to knowing that of the SAT, ACT and GRE. If patients know the content of the test beforehand, they can undermine its validity, Butcher said. ItâÄôs a concern because the test is also used to assess defendants during court cases. Butcher said he received dozens of emails each day from concerned psychology practitioners alerting him that the MMPI test was online. ItâÄôs now a âÄústandardâÄù in the industry. Butcher, who has taught classes about the MMPI for 40 years at the University, said the testâÄôs strength is that it is based on empirical data and research that supports its conclusions. ![]() The MMPI is used in clinical settings as well as court cases and personnel issues, said James Butcher, University psychology professor emeritus. ![]() Dobson has since removed the test and Rotenberg is unsure if the University will still pursue legal action. Rotenberg said the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory âÄî the most widely used personality test âÄî has âÄúfinancial value,âÄù and makes about $1 million for the University annually. âÄúA test is no good if all of the questions and answers are on the Internet,âÄù Rotenberg said. Mark Rotenberg, the UniversityâÄô general counsel, said the school sent notices to both Kazserv âÄî the server hosting the website which posted the test âÄî and New Zealand-based hypnotherapist Andrew Dobson informing them they were violating copyright. So take the test, but take it very very seriously, measuring each question carefully before answering. The University of Minnesota is suing a website operator who posted its acclaimed psychological test online, saying itâÄôs a cheat sheet for people to outwit the personality test. and the MMPI would show - very generally - what you're problems are. If you expect an insurance company to pay for a psychiatric problem, that insurer is going to delve deep into all exquisitely personal areas of your life to see if something else is the source of your distress. ![]() trouble is, to stop and think and give thoughtful answers to every question takes 4 hours and nobody wants to babysit you for 4 hours.įOR EACH AND EVERY QUESTION YOU DON'T KNOW THE TIMEFRAME you must not answer and ask the doctor.ĪND THEN YOU NEED to read who scored it and how.ĪND IF YOU REFUSE to take the test, the judge can suspend proceedings until you do complete it. The psychologists I know say you are not to complete it at home. Of course, it it MUCH MORE sophisticated that than, but you can see how it could be used against you. Consider, if it asks you the color of the sky 10 times and you 'Blue' 5 times but then answer 'purple twice and 'yellow' twice and 'Red' once, the test results will show you don't really know the correct answer.or you are lying. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory asks the same question 10-20 different ways.and if you answer inconsistently, the results will show you are 'faking' or simply not believable. ![]()
